JOSEPH MANNING-DODD
AMFT #155592 & APCC #19345
My name is Joseph Manning. I’m an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist as well as an Associate Professional Clinical Counselor. I earned my MA in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles.
After being what I now call an “industrial strength best friend” for many years, and after being told countless times that I should be a therapist, I finally took that advise to heart. I bring a feeling of safety into the therapy room, which allows clients to discuss anything that troubles them without fear of judgment or comparison. I’ve worked successfully with clients from first grade into post-retirement. I welcome individuals, couples, families, and groups.
I am a helper. While I can’t do the work for a client, I do my best to make a space in which the work unfolds naturally and at the client’s pace. My hope is that the hardest part of any client’s journey with me is finding the courage to begin the work. When our working relationship is established, we can analyze events of the past, the present, or the future, and find the connections that nurture the understanding and confidence necessary to achieve a client’s goals. Together, we can address anxiety, depression, trauma, and the relationship dynamics and stage of life issues with which they intersect.
I am at my best helping a client to understand and work with relationships. I work most naturally in Narrative and Gestalt modalities to help clients find the unrecognized meanings and connections between past and present relationships with self and others in order to make the most of their future. At the same time, I recognize the value of CBT and DBT approaches, which offer well-established techniques for achieving stability and restoring function when the present is overwhelming.
